Humans had been around for thousands of years and they slowly developed societies. In their growth, they created new skills and developed new technologies. One of these technologies is cuneiform, the first type of administrative writing. This writing style consisted of clay and a tool made of sharpened reed that they would use to create wedges in the clay. They developed many shapes and patterns to represent words. This writing style was very complex, so very few people were actually able to use it. Because of the lack of users, those capable of writing became very important people. The writers were hired and the cuneiform became a tool for signing contracts. One of the most famous pieces depicting cuneiform is the Stele of Hammurabi. The stele was constructed in the early 18th century BCE by the Babylonian king, Hammurabi. On it are nearly 300 different laws designed to better govern the Babylonian kingdom. These laws make over 3,500 line of characters and they covered all different aspects of life. On top of the stele is a high relief of Hammurabi in true profile, in order to show his people that he was the ultimate power.
In marine biology, communication is extremely important. You must be able to converse with a large range of people and to be able to effectively transfer information that has been gathered. Cuneiform shows the importance of communication as it allowed for more people to get a piece of information. It also helped reduce the possibility of people changing the word, as it was recorded. This shows an important aspect of marine biology as the scientists need to be able to pass on information to others and it needs to remain as accurate as possible. The Stele of Hammurabi showcases the importance cuneiform and proper communication holds for large groups of people. The stele was used by Hammurabi to communicate his laws to the common people. It allowed them to read it and understand what will happen if the codes were broken. This is important for marine biology because expectations and rules need to be laid out for safety and conduct.
