Around 530 BCE, the Andokides Painter brought forth a new technique called red-figure painting. The differences between the two techniques are exemplified on a series bilingual vases, or vases with the same composition painted on both sides (one in black-figure and one in red-figure). The amphora by the Andokides Painter that features the Achilles and Ajax panel is a remarkable example of a bilingual vase. The new red-figure technique was significantly superior to the old black-figure approach. Red-figure is the opposite of black-figure. What used to be black was now red, and vice versa. This gave artists using the red-figure technique the ability to create contrast, vary the thickness of the lines, build up the glaze to give relief to curly hair, or dilute it to create varying shades, producing much higher visual impact and detailed renderings of their subjects and/or stories.
Graphic designers are responsible for generating design solutions that have a high visual impact. They must utilize techniques that will produce the results that their clients ask for. Like the Andokides painter, they need to use good judgment to manipulate the formal elements of visual communication such as contrast and color. Rebranding is a great example of using these elements to create fresh visual impact for an aging brand; and when companies need a fresh look, it is the graphic designer's job to create it. Some recent examples of this are the 2003 UPS rebrand, the 2000 BP rebrand and the 2012 Wendy's rebrand. More examples can be seen in the image below.
