Quinctius Valgus and Marcus Porcius were two wealthy Pompeian town officials who commissioned the construction of the large amphitheater at the southeastern end of Pompeii. The amphitheater was built on an artificial mountain of concrete, had a cloth awning that could be rolled down to shield spectators from sun and rain, and had distinctive external double staircases that enabled large numbers of people to enter and exit in an orderly fashion. Of course the officials had a vision for the result in mind, but all of the extra features would not have been part of the amphitheater without the collaboration of many great minds.
